“Intensity” selected by MCAS jury

Shelley holds an affinity to all things canine and her Phoenix residence is regularly visited by a pair of red foxes. She wanted to capture the fox’s intense gaze and used free motion quilting techniques to paint the fox purely with thread. This level of realism is created by constant changes of thread weight and color to capture the colors and light reflected in the subject. Varied stitch lengths create a perception of movement and dots of shadow color. Intensity is based off a photo by Giedrius Stakauskas who granted Shelley copyright permission for the painting.
