Two Art Quilts accepted into AQS Des Moines International Quilt Competition

July 17, 2023

I was ecstatic to learn that two of my quilts were accepted into the American Quilters Society (AQS) Des Moines international quilt competition:

Modern Minimalist Snowflake was accepted into the 1st time entry category. I made this quilt with the idea of being able to hang it in the foyer of our yet to be built home. My husband is a minimalist modern architect and had designed a home for us when I started the design of my quilt. I wanted the concept to be modern. I started the idea during Christmas; alas, the quilt became a snowflake. It took years to design and complete. I had just started piecing it when our actual house build started. Long nights and weekends at the construction site got in the way of completion. During the final months of the build, I had my first SCAD and heart attack. Fatigue slowed me down again, but I finally completed it about a year later. How wonderful to see the fruits of labor be recognized by AQS.

My SCAD Awareness quilt was accepted into the Wall Quilt category. After my second SCAD and widow maker heart attack, I dived into learning more about SCAD. I was never under the proper medical protocol after my first SCAD. The often poor medical after-care experience until I found qualified care, and my research made me want to create awareness to save lives. The quilt was based off a zebra photo I took from the Houston Zoo. Getting this quilt into a show that will have over 17,000 views is phenomenal! Please visit www.SCADresarch.org to learn about this disease and how to fight for a multi-run troponin test if you are admitted to a hospital for chest pains.
